Brief Intro

After graduating from Albright College in Reading, Pa., with a B.S. in biochemistry, Andrew Gelman completed his medical training at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1979, remaining in Philadelphia for an internship at Metropolitan Hospital. He then joined the Albert Einstein Medical Center for residencies in general surgery and orthopaedic surgery from 1980 through 1986. Dr. Gelman also served as an emergency-room and house physician at Garden State Community Hospital in Marlton, N.J., from 1982 through 1986 and was on staff with the orthopaedic clinic at John F. Kennedy Hospital in Philadelphia from 1984 through 1986. After a year’s work with Cherry Hill Orthopaedics, Dr. Gelman entered private practice in New Castle County in 1987. He joined Orthopaedic Specialists, P.A., in Newark in 1993. Dr. Gelman is a past associate instructor in orthopaedic surgery at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and has authored award-winning exhibits on magnetic resonance imaging. He has 20 years of experience as a guest lecturer at numerous institutions in the Delaware Valley and beyond, covering subjects such as pediatric deformities, osteoporosis in the elderly, total joint replacement, orthopaedic trauma and emergencies, bone tumors, and Paget’s disease. Dr. Gelman holds current licensure in Delaware and Pennsylvania. He is affiliated with both Christiana Care and St. Francis Hospital, and has served on committees for blood usage and podiatry at St. Francis, where he remains on the Medical Executive Committee. He was chair of Riverside Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1988 through 1996. Dr. Gelman is associated with the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society, the Medical Society of Delaware, and the Delaware Society of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a 1989 Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has served as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of the Delaware State Osteopathic Medical Society.
