Dr. Hanmer is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He did his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and has advanced training in total joint replacement and hip arthroscopy. Dr. Hanmer is a Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Newton Wellesley Hospital as well as the Associate Chair of the Newton Wellesley Physician Hospital Organization. He holds other leadership positions as well. Total Joint ArthroplastyDr. Hanmer applies an individual approach to patients with joint arthritis and uses minimally invasive techniques for both hip and knee replacement. He uses the direct anterior approach for hip replacement and has over 10 years of experience in this technique. He is experienced in both total knee replacement and partial knee replacement. These techniques result in minimized sensitivity and rapid return of function. Joint PreservationDr. Hanmer is skilled in joint preservation surgery. He uses hip arthroscopy in the treatment of femoral-acetabular impingement (FAI), labral repair, and labral reconstruction. He has over 15 years of experience in these techniques having successfully treated young competitive athletes as well as aging athletes who want to remain at their best performance. Patient EngagementDr. Hanmer uses a patient engagement platform known as GetWell Loop which allows for an exchange of information between physician and patient that has been highly regarded by patients. Patients feel connected throughout the surgical experience. The system provides reminders and important information as well as allowing patients to communicate back and forth.
